Northern Lehigh Middle School Receives Grant
The Middle School PE department was just awarded $500.00 from a grant Michelle Raber submitted to the Henry L. Mickley/Mable S. Fravel Charitable Trust for the purpose of recreation in Slatington. This money will be used to purchase equipment for the Middle School PE and afterschool Intramural program. In past years we were awarded money to purchase a new basketball backboard, rim and net for our outdoor basketball court.

On September 15, RCN of the Lehigh Valley presented a donation of school supplies to the Northern Lehigh School District. Each year, RCN employees hold a School Supply Drive for a school district in the Lehigh Valley and Northern Lehigh was deeply honored to be the beneficiary of this year's collection. Donated items will be useful to students of all grade levels and include everything from crayons and glue sticks to hand sanitizer and tissues. Past drives have benefited Allentown, Easton, Northampton, and Whitehall-Coplay Schools. The Northern Lehigh School District would like to offer its sincerest gratitude to RCN and its employees for this wonderful display of kindness and generosity.

Wyatt Delans is ranked first academically in Northern Lehigh's junior class and Jose Avila is ranked third in the Bulldogs' senior class. But it's not just in the classroom where Delans and Avila are finding success. Despite Northern Lehigh not having a swim team, both swimmers will represent the Bulldogs in the PIAA Class AA championships on Friday and Saturday at Bucknell University.

"It is great making it to states," Delans said. "It has been a goal of mine to make it to states so it's pretty great being able to go there." Delans is seeded 31st in the 100 breaststroke at states.

Avila, who was the first ever swimmer to represent Northern Lehigh at states last year, is seeded 16th in the 500 freestyle. Delans and Avila swim with Parkland Aquatic Club year round under coach Matt Beckwith and also competed at some Allen meets this season. Their times qualified for the District 11 Class AA championships a few weeks ago at Parkland High School. Both swimmers had strong showings at the event.

Avila captured the silver in the 500 freestyle and took the bronze in the 200 freestyle at districts. Delans earned the silver in the 100 breaststroke and finished fifth in the 200 individual medley. Despite not having a Northern Lehigh swim team, the duo is hoping to make an impact for their school.

"You don't get the team experience. I know when everyone goes to swim meets, they're all excited. I want that too. But hey, I'm still here. I'm still representing my school. It's still fun," Avila said.

"At school, I get a bunch of support from my classmates and teachers. They ask me how I was doing in my season, and congratulated me when they heard about how I did at districts," Delans said.

"It feels all the same to me," Delans added. "I am doing my best to represent our school at the district and state level, and in the process I get respect from the school."
